The Russian Federation is the largest country in the world. It occupies about one-seventh of the earth"s surface. It covers the eastern part of Europe and the northern part of Asia. Its total area is about 17 million square kilometers. The country is washed by 3 oceans: the Pacific, the Arctic and the Atlantic. In the south Russia borders on China, Mongolia, Korea, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Azerbaijan. In the west it borders on Norway, Finland, the Baltic States, Belorussia, and the Ukraine. It also has a sea-border with the USA. There is hardly a country in the world where such a variety of scenery and vegetation can be found. We have steppes in the south, plains and forests in the midland, tundra and taiga in the north, highlands and deserts in the east. There are two great plains in Russia: the Great Russian Plain and the West Siberian Lowland. There are several mountains chains on the territory of the country: the Urals, the Caucasus, the Altai and others. The largest mountain chain, the Urals, separates Europe from Asia.
There are over two million rivers in Russia. Europe"s biggest river, the Volga, flows into the Caspian Sea. The main Siberian rivers - the Ob, the Yenisei and the Lena- flow from the south to the north. The Amur in the Far East flows into the Pacific Ocean.
Russia is rich in beautiful lakes. The world"s deepest lake is Lake Baikal. It is much smaller than the Baltic Sea, but there is much more water in it than in the Baltic Sea. The water in the lake is so clear that if you look down you can see stones on the bottom.
Russia has one-sixth of the world"s forests. They are concentrated in the European north of the country, in Siberia and in the Far East.
On the vast territory of the country there are various types of climate, from arctic in the north to subtropical in the south. In the middle of the country the climate is temperate and continental.
Russia is very rich in oil, iron ore, natural gas, copper, nickel and other mineral resources.
Russia is a parliamentary republic. The Head of State is the President. The legislative powers are exercised by the Duma.
The capital of Russia is Moscow. It is its largest political, scientific, cultural and industrial centre. It"sone of the oldest Russian cities.
At present, the political and economic situation in the country is rather complicated. There are a lot of problems in the national economy of the Russian Federation. The industrial production is decreasing. The prices are constantly rising; the rate of inflation is very high. People are losing their jobs because many factories and plants are going bankrupt. But in spite of the problems Russia is facing at present, there are a lot of opportunities for this country to become one of the leading countries in the world. I"m sure that we, the younger generation, can do very much to make Russia as strong and powerful as it used to be.

It’s believed that the place where we were born is significantly important for us. First of all, we are greatly influenced by people around us and we are formed by moral and cultural values existing in a particular country. Moreover, we reflect the history of our nation and experience gained through the centuries. So, I can say that “motherland” is not only the word, but it’s in fact who we are.
As for me, I was born in Russia and I’m absolutely convinced that it’s the best place for living. To start with, Russia is the largest country in the world. It is famous for its natural sources such as oil and gas as well as its cultural inheritance for the reason that Russian music, art and literature are well-known all over the world. Thus, the masterpieces of Pushkin, Chekhov, Repin, Malevich and Tchaikovsky have charmed millions of people in different parts of our planet.
However, Russia is also quite a multinational country, though all nations have a common history. In spite of the fact that the country is divided into federal republics and autonomous regions and areas, they are all united by common goals and ideology that leads to peaceful coexistence and productive collaboration of so different parts of our diverse country.
Furthermore, Russian nature dramatically varies too. One can find everything imaginable here. From enormous endless fields and forests with their unique beauty of flowers and trees to fascinating mountains, pure lakes and rivers. Here we can also see one of the symbols of our country, birch. Unity with nature brings us internal balance and energy.
Thus, I can say that I’m really proud of my country, of its history and culture. I like travelling and visiting other countries, understanding other cultures, but there is no such amazing and diverse country as Russia which is so comfortable to live in.

In the future, I want to get a profession that benefits my country and people living in it. I want all people to love Russia as well as many famous writers, great poets, wise public figures love it and just as I love it. So instead of ruthless destruction of nature and killing rare wild animals, people should preserve and multiply the wealth of our Russia.
Russia is the place of origin of funny and unusual competitions like tank biathlon and helicopter golf. The first one is a part of military vehicles drivers training, while the other is played by civilian pilots as well. A giant club is attached to the helicopter, the aim is to drive a ball to the special area. It is a work of a team of five men - two pilots, a coordinator and two spare players.
We should be proud of our country - its natural resources, territory, history, and of course, those people who have done a lot of good for our country and made it truly powerful.
